Sjabbat Besjalach – 3, 4 feb – Nieuwe RAS-rabbijn

Deze week begint sjabbat en sjoel om 17:10 uur en sjabbat eindigt om 18:17 uur.

Nieuwe RAS Rabbijn: Daniel Stern

Deze sjabbat zal rabbijn Daniel Stern voor het eerst als onze rabbijn in de RAS-sjoel zijn. Wij hopen dat u allemaal komt om hem welkom te heten.

Daniel Stern is geboren in Mexico en woont inmiddels vijftien jaar in Nederland. Hij kwam oorspronkelijk naar Amsterdam om in het Kolel te leren, besloot om hier te blijven en is sinds tien jaar als docent aan het Cheider verbonden, waar ook zijn vrouw Yael les geeft in joodse vakken.

Rabbijn Stern zal de RAS gaan versterken op verschillende punten waaronder het geven van een derasja (predikatie) op sjabbat en jom tov en  sji’oeriem op allerlei niveau’s en over verschillende onderwerpen. Deze zijn toegankelijk voor zowel mannen als vrouwen en voor de kinderen van de RAS zal een apart programma worden gemaakt. Ook is Rabbijn Stern beschikbaar voor het één-op-één leren of in kleine groepjes. Yael zal zich ook gaan inzetten voor de RAS en met name voor de vrouwelijke sjoel-bezoekers.

Rabbijn Mamlok – Parashat Dewariem

This week we start the fifth and final book of the five books of the Torah, the book of Devarim.  Moshe Rabbainu is readying the people to enter the land of Israel, and conquer it.  As the Jewish people prepare to cross through the territory of Emor, Moshe sends messengers to Sichon, the king of Emor, to make peace with him and to buy food and drink from him. Dwar Tora Rabbi Mamlok

In this week’s parsha, Parashat Shelach Lecha, the Torah describes the mission of the spies to scout out the Land of Israel. We learn that the spies made a big mistake by speaking badly about the Land.

Rashi, one of the commentaries on the Torah, asks why the parsha of the spies follows that of Miriam being punished with leprosy for speaking lashon hara (lit. evil tongue) about her brother Moshe. He answers that the spies saw what happened to Miriam and they should have taken heed and not spoken evil about the Land of Israel.

This seems not to be an accurate comparison. Miriam spoke badly about her brother, about a person. How does that lesson transfer automatically to a country — to trees and stones? Maybe the Torah prohibition is limited to speaking badly about a human being because we can damage a person with slander and gossip. But a land? Is a land sensitive to slurs?  And yet the implication is clear that the spies should have learned from what happened to Miriam and should have applied that lesson to their report on the Land of Israel.

The Torah prohibits us from doing evil not just for the effect that it creates on others, but because of the effect it has on ourselves. It’s true that words cannot harm sticks and stones. It’s ourselves that we damage when we speak slander.  This is the difference between our Torah and a secular book of laws.  A book of laws is created to bring peace between people so that society can function.  Our Torah is more than that.  Our Torah also teaches us how to change and improve ourselves so that we become better people and thus enhance our own lives.

Parashat Bechukotai – Rabbijn Mamlok

Every parent, however loving, is occasionally forced to punish. Be it to change a behavior or to teach consequences of an action, few are the parents who have never had to punish their child, despite the strength of their love for their children. So too, there are times when we as a nation deserve punishment.

In this week’s parasha, Parashat Bechukotai, the parasha starts by specifying all of the blessings that we will receive if we listen to the word of G-d. However, the parasha continues and enumerates the punishments that we can expect to receive if we turn our backs on the commandments of G-d. Yet, we know that our Father in Heaven loves us even more than a human father loves his children. Thus, each of the punishments listed also contains a hidden blessing.

For example, in the parasha God declares that “I will scatter you among the nations.” This is a hidden blessing, because if the Jewish camp is geographically divided, then when one community is persecuted, the other can carry on.

Also, in the parasha it says that when the Jews are in exile, the “Land [of Israel]will be desolate.” This is a hidden blessing, because throughout the millennia – as numerous empires conquered the Land, and countless wars were fought for its possession – astonishingly, no conqueror ever succeeded in permanently settling Israel or causing the desert to bloom. This, of course, made it easier for the Jewish people to return in the 20th century and resettle their homeland – a hidden blessing.

This concept is one that we can apply to our personal lives as well. Upon reading these “hidden blessings” in this week’s parasha, we are reminded that even when we are dealt a rough hand in life, it is wrapped in love and blessing. Even if it is hard for us to see at the time, they are a product of our Father in Heaven who loves us with a love even stronger than that of a father for his child.

Zoon voor Rabbijn en mevrouw Mamlok

Afgelopen sjabbat hebben Rabbijn en mevrouw Mamlok een gezonde zoon gekregen.

Namens de RASclub wensen wij hen van harte mazal tov en dat hij mag opgroeien le’tora, le’choepa oele’ma’asiem toviem.

Sji’oeriem

In verband met de afwezigheid van Rabbijn Mamlok worden er tot na pesach geen sji’oeriem gegeven. Zodra de sji’oeriem weer van start gaan zullen wij het nieuwe rooster bekendmaken.

It was in the days following the first exile when King Achashvairosh ruled the land of Persia. His wicked advisor, Haman, was angered by the fact that Mordechai the Jew refused to bow to him. When Haman came to Achashvairosh with his plan to choose a day where the whole country would wage war against the Jews to annihilate them, he approached the king with the prophetic words “there is a nation who is scattered out amongst us.” Read more…

Parashat Va’Yakel – Rabbijn Mamlok

In last weeks parasha, Parashat Ki Tisa, we read of the story of the golden calf. To make the golden calf, when the women of the Jewish Nation were asked for their golden jewelery for its creation, they refused. Not even one woman donated her jewelery for the purpose of building the golden calf. In contrast, in this weeks parasha, Parashat VaYakel, we find that for the purpose of building the Mishkan, the tabernacle, the Jewish woman were happy to donate their valuable jewelery for this purpose. Parashat Ki Tisa – Rabbijn Mamlok

In this weeks parasha, Parashat Ki Tisa, the Jewish Nation is given the commandment of Machasit HaShekel, a yearly donation to the Mishkan, the tabernacle, of one half of a silver shekel coin. This donation was money that went toward the communal sacrifices that were offered on behalf of the entire nation. Although at other times each person was able to donate the amount that he wanted and felt that he was able, during the time of the collection of the Machasit HaShekel each person was commanded to give the same amount, whether rich or poor. Even a poor man who was sustained throughout the year by the charity of others was not exempt from the mitzva of giving a half shekel coin during the yearly collection. Although not a large sum of money, it was of great importance that each person give, and give the same amount. Why? And why are we specifically commanded to give a half of a shekel coin, and not a full shekel coin? Read more…
